Riding the Waves: A Guide to Surfing in Bali, Indonesia

Surfers are seen all over the globe, taking on waves, and Bali in Indonesia is a fantastic spot to head out with your board. Beyond its stunning natural beauty, Bali offers numerous places for surfers to catch waves. A great starting point is Batu Mejan and Canggu, two adjoining beaches perfect for surfing.

In the southern part of the island, Dreamland Beach is a popular surf spot. Surrounded by hills, this picturesque bay lives up to its name, attracting many surfers and spectators who come to watch the impressive surfing maneuvers. It’s a trendy area that you reach after passing Pecatu Indah.

The stretch of beach between Kuta and Legian is the most frequented by tourists. It features consistent waves that aren’t too overpowering, making it an excellent location for beginners. From here, you can easily go surfing, sailing, diving, fishing, or rafting anywhere in southern Bali.

On the southwest coast, east of Negara, lies the small town of Medewi. Medewi’s Pantai Medewi beach offers good waves, characterized by vast gray rocks and smooth, round black pebbles.

Nusa Lembongan, one of the three islands off Bali’s southeastern coast, attracts tourists with its perfect beaches and areas for surfing, snorkeling, and diving. Its three main reef breaks are ideal for expert surfers. For divers, Blue Corner and Jackfish Point are the best spots, with great snorkeling near the pontoon cruises and along the north coast of the island.

Around Ulu Watu, on the southwestern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, you’ll find legendary reef breaks. This area is known for its high tides and formidable waves, suitable only for very experienced surfers. Padang Padang is the only spot here where visitors can swim and surf in normal conditions, with facilities available for renting and buying surfing gear.
